THE FIRST CHURCH SERVICE
On January 11th, 1986, the first worship took place at Salem United Methodist Church, and it was officiated jointly by Rev. J.O. Sarfo and the late Rev. Dr. Samuel Akesson. The late Rev. Dr. Samuel Akesson, preached the first sermon, and Sister Elizabeth Sarfo conducted the order of service. Thirteen members were present at the first church service.
INAUGURATION OF THE CHURCH
The Church was inaugurated on April 17th, 1988 by the late Rev. Dr. Joseph Bassaw, who deputized for the late Rev. Dr. Jacob S.A. Stephens, the then President of the Conference of the Methodist Church in Ghana. Immediately, after the inauguration, brothers and sisters from Brooklyn broke off to start the Ghana Wesley United Methodist Church in Brooklyn due to the commuting distance from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
AFFILIATION WITH THE NEW YORK ANNUAL CONFERENCE
With the support from the late Rt. Rev. Prof. Kwesi Dickson, in June 1993, Ghana Methodist Church, U.S.A was accepted into the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Ghana Methodist Church U.S.A was changed to Ghana United Methodist Church, Bronx, USA. The late Rev. Dr. George T. Johnson, who was then the District Superintendent of the Metropolitan North District, assisted in the process.
REGISTRATION AND PLACES OF WORSHIP
Ghana Methodist Church, USA, was registered in October, 1986, but due to some few changes, in the registration package, it was re-registered in Albany, sometime in 1987, by lawyer Dr. Victor Essien. After the inauguration of the church in Harlem in 1988, in 1989 the church moved to Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, and worshipped at the St. James Chapel. After almost two years at St. James Chapel, the church moved to Broadway Temple of the United Methodist Church at 174th St. in Manhattan, in the year 1991. In April, 1995, the church finally relocated to Tremont United Methodist church, 1951 Washington Avenue.
170th Anniversary CELEBRATION
Following the Ghana Methodist Church tradition, the Ghana United Methodist Church in the Bronx, celebrated the 170th Anniversary of the Ghana Methodist Church with enthusiasm, on December 4th, 2005. Ghana United Methodist Church 10th Anniversary celebration was held on Sunday, November 9th, 1997. During the Annual Charge Conference, on December 10th, 2006, lawyer John K. Akpalu initiated a Resolution and officially re-incorporated Ghana United Methodist Church, Bronx to be identified with the New York Annual Conference. This was inadvertently not done when the Church was accepted to the New York Annual Conference in June 1993. During the time of the acceptance to the New York Annual Conference, Ghana United Methodist Church was granted tax exemption status by the Internal Revenue Service in June 1993.
